(Web Desk) - The celestial spectacle of the first full moon of 2024, known as the 'Wolf Moon,' is set to grace the night sky on January 25.

Spectators worldwide can anticipate a captivating view of the luminous sky on this chilly night, providing a unique experience after sunset.

It's important to note that the timing of the moonrise varies across different regions. In New York City, the moonrise is scheduled for 4:56 p.m., creating a picturesque scene against the cityscape.

Full moons occur when the Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon, causing the entire side facing Earth to be bathed in sunlight, as confirmed by the U.S. Naval Observatory.

According to astronomical data, the moon will be visible during the day, rising approximately 8 minutes before sunset on January 25.

Just after sunset, sky gazers may also have the opportunity to observe both Saturn and Jupiter.

Why it's called a 'Wolf Moon'?

NASA attributes the name to the howling packs of wolves often heard outside villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter, particularly in January.

It's worth noting that the association of wolves howling at the moon may be more of a myth than a scientific reality, as suggested by the Smithsonian.

The 'Wolf Moon' also goes by various names in different regions, holding cultural significance. In Europe, it is referred to as the "Ice Moon" and the "Old Moon." Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, the first full moon in January is celebrated as Duruthu Poya, marking the initial visit of Buddha to the country.

The next full moon, known as the "Snow Moon," is set to grace the night sky on February 24, promising another breathtaking celestial display.
